Egon Schiele's squats this 1910 nude into a shape no textbook diagram ever taught: knees splayed, feet twisted outward, one arm cocked hard behind a tilted head and the other juts sideways into empty paper.
A single wash of acid yellow runs down the thigh like sickness made visible, the color a jaundiced counterpoint to the flesh above it, pale ochre streaked with quick pencil hatching at the ribs. Areolas swell into circles of burnt orange rimmed in near-black, exaggerated past anatomy into something closer to a wound or an eye.
Schiele left the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna the year before this sheet was made, and the crouch reads like an argument against everything that school taught about a standing, classical pose. No chair, no floor line holds the figure; it hovers on bare tan paper, balanced on the tension of its own bent limbs. Treating classical balance as something to strain against instead of holding it. A body caught mid-collapse, or mid-spring, refusing to resolve into either.
