Description

Ortlip’s Male Nude with Drawn Bow captures a figure at full tension, every contour alive with coiled precision. Muscles ripple across back, shoulders, and thighs, carved by shifting light into bronze, rose, and shadow.

The archer’s stance stretches diagonally across the canvas, one arm extended, the other bent, a bow pulled taut against pale sky. Earthy strokes build the ground beneath him, while streaks of steel blue and ochre suggest rocky escarpments.

The nude body, turned away from the viewer, channels archaic strength yet pulses with modern vitality. This composition dwells on energy held in suspension, a single moment suspended before release, where anatomy, gesture, and paint collapse into one charged instant of heroic beauty.

About the Artist

H. Willard Ortlip (1886–1969) was an American painter whose career traced the golden arc of early 20th-century art. Beginning his studies in 1902 at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, he trained under William Merritt Chase, Sargeant Kendall, Hugh Breckenridge, and his uncle Henry McCarter. Twice awarded the Cresson Scholarship, he absorbed European influences abroad before returning to Philadelphia, where he and his wife, fellow artist Aimee Eschner, established a studio at Independence Square in 1910. Celebrated as a society portraitist, Ortlip also illustrated for Collier’s and expanded his practice in New York, where his free-lance advertising work broadened his reach and reputation.
