Théodore Géricault (1791 – 1824) was a pioneering French Romantic painter known for his dynamic compositions and expressive realism.

Born in Rouen, Géricault trained under Carle Vernet and later studied nude classical figure composition under Pierre-Narcisse Guérin. Though he ultimately found greater inspiration from the works of Rubens, Titian, and Velázquez during his time studying at the Louvre—becoming a significant bridge between Neoclassicism and Romanticism.

In his later years, Géricault painted a series of ten portraits of the mentally ill, capturing the psychological depth and complexity of his subjects. These works, along with studies of severed heads and limbs, reflect his fascination with the human condition. Géricault died in Paris in 1824 at the age of 32—buried at Père Lachaise Cemetery.
