About the Artwork
Charles Walter Stetson's Magnolia Samsung case carries the hush of a Providence studio where oil met linen in the Tonalist tradition. Cream-white petals curl open against bituminous black, their surfaces threaded with celadon-green veins and cerulean undertones Stetson built through wet-on-wet layering. The chartreuse pistil glows faintly at the blossom's heart, stamen catching diffused studio light.
Behind the flower, hunter-green leaves absorb darkness while their edges hold a knife-thin luminosity. Stetson painted magnolias as meditation—Southern flora transposed to New England aesthetics, botanical accuracy yielding to atmosphere.
Each brushstroke drags pigment into shadow, creating tonal gradations that defined American still life painting of the 1890s. This Samsung case holds that slow unfurling, pressing nineteenth-century oil technique into everyday intimacy.
