Artwork Description

A coral-pink ground hums behind the Japanese Woman Picking Chrysanthemum—Harunobu's signature mica wash lending the scene an unearthly warmth. She bends toward the chrysanthemum with the slow attention of tea ceremony, her fingers brushing petals the color of persimmon rind. This nishiki-e print from the Meiwa period captures the bijin-ga tradition at its most intimate: no courtesans performing, no kabuki gestures—just a woman and a flower at water's edge.

Her kimono carries scattered crane motifs, each fold announcing origami precision. The shimada coiffure rises in lacquered black, anchored by coral beads and a silver hairpin glinting like a held secret. Teal collar bands frame her downturned profile. Harunobu pioneered multi-block printing in 1760s Edo, layering mauve, vermilion, sage-green, and ochre-gold until the surface shimmered with autumnal hush. And in Japanese Woman Picking Chrysanthemum, the kiku bloom she reaches for was an imperial emblem, now rendered tender—pressed between season and sentiment.

Artist Biography

Suzuki Harunobu (c. 1725–1770) was the ukiyo-e artist who quietly detonated color in Japanese printmaking. Working in Edo, he pioneered nishiki-e, the first fully polychrome woodblock prints, debuting in 1765 and instantly making earlier limited-color techniques obsolete. Harunobu’s world is one of slender figures, poetic gestures, and suspended moments drawn from classical literature, seasonal ritual, and everyday urban life. His bijin-ga crystallized an ideal of eternal youth, tender and otherworldly. Using multiple carved blocks, refined pigments, and subtle tsubushi backgrounds, he fused technical innovation with lyric restraint, reshaping ukiyo-e and influencing generations who followed.
