Katsushika Hokusai pins two worlds together in Little Raven with Minamoto Clan Sword: a jet-black karasu, wings torn open mid-flight, and a samurai's sheathed katana slung diagonal across its breast like a second spine. Lavender-gray tsuka binding, diamond-knotted, meets rust-red sageo cord looping the mottled saya three times over.
The bird's beak parts on a downward tilt; its pale eye ring catches light the paper never had. Ume branches claw upward at the corners, red buds and white blossom stitched in fine black outline against cream washi. Four columns of cursive kana float upper right, kyoka verse from the Genroku era pressed into service beside talons and steel.
In A Comparison of Genroku Poems and Shells, Hokusai's late Edo period woodblock hand favored flat pigment over shadow. Ochre and teal-blue laid thin across paper grain. Crow as omen, blade as inheritance: bushido iconography folded into a bird print that reads as elegy and armor both.
