About the Artwork
A slab of Cairo sunlight seems trapped in the octagonal knotwork, its ink-black lines folding inward like corridors in a scholar’s dream. Émile Prisse d’Avennes recorded this design with the precision of a cartographer mapping the unseen—every turn of kufic script a street, every corner a quiet square.
The upper register flares in red and smoke-grey tessellations, a pattern that could crown a dome or line a palace gate. Below, earth tones ground the composition, framed in bands that recall carved wood and enamel inlay.
