About the Artwork
A deep ultramarine field holds an intricate lattice of scrolling foliage, where crimson, emerald, and gold-feathered birds meet in perfect counterpoint. Their stylised forms echo the grandeur of Mamluk silks and Cairene tilework, a dialogue of symmetry and saturated colour.
Each line and curve recalls the trained hand of a 19th-century draughtsman preserving the visual lexicon of Islamic ornament. Émile Prisse d’Avennes gathered such patterns during his long Egyptian sojourn, translating textiles and architectural motifs into enduring plates.
