Description

In Kneeling Narcissus, Anton Kolig interprets the ancient myth through radical color and fragmented anatomy. The youth bends toward the pool, yet his outline blurs under restless strokes of emerald, vermilion, and ultramarine.

Kolig’s Expressionist vocabulary splinters the body into abstracted zones, emphasizing motion over clarity, sensation over perfection. The mirrored image, ghosted in watery blues and burgundy, heightens the psychological tension: a self encountered, but never grasped. Painted during early twentieth-century Austrian modernism, the work fuses mythological tradition with avant-garde experiment.

The kneeling nude registers as both physical presence and chromatic energy, a testament to Kolig’s capacity to reimagine Narcissus not as static allegory but as a living exploration of form, reflection, and desire.

About the Artist

Anton Kolig (1886–1950) stands as one of Austria’s boldest modern painters, his canvases aflame with color, muscle, and spirit. A founding voice of the Nötscher Kreis, Kolig fused Expressionist intensity with reverence for Michelangelo and Lovis Corinth, creating monumental male nudes, radiant portraits, and religious visions. Trained in Vienna and briefly sharpened in France, he later taught in Stuttgart, shaping new generations of artists. Though war destroyed much of his oeuvre and left him scarred, his surviving works blaze in the Belvedere, Leopold Collection, and beyond. Kolig’s legacy endures, not least through his grandson, contemporary artist Cornelius Kolig.
