Artwork Description
In Kneeling Narcissus, Anton Kolig interprets the ancient myth through radical color and fragmented anatomy. The youth bends toward the pool, yet his outline blurs under restless strokes of emerald, vermilion, and ultramarine.
Kolig’s Expressionist vocabulary splinters the body into abstracted zones, emphasizing motion over clarity, sensation over perfection. The mirrored image, ghosted in watery blues and burgundy, heightens the psychological tension: a self encountered, but never grasped. Painted during early twentieth-century Austrian modernism, the work fuses mythological tradition with avant-garde experiment.
