Charcoal threads of rain fall through Nara's cedar canopy, and beneath them Kawase Hasui's 1933 view of Kasuga Shrine holds its vermillion gate steady against a Showa-era downpour.
Here, within Kasuga's Shinto grounds near Nara's deer park, two women walk beneath a tilted umbrella as rain keeps falling, unfinished. Their kimono patterned with plum, ash-gray check, and crimson plaid as they share one indigo wagasa whose pale ring catches what little light slips past storm clouds.
Water pools across the courtyard flagstone, doubling the scarlet pillars, the charred-timber eaves, the string of bronze lanterns swinging in dim rows above the shrine's cream plaster walls. Lanterns first strung by pilgrims of the Fujiwara clan centuries before this Taisho-trained printmaker set brush to woodblock.
Shin-hanga craft turns weather into color: slate-gray sky, ochre-touched earth, teal-shadowed pine needles bent low with rain-weight. Watanabe Shozaburo's print workshop carried Hasui's Nara scenes past ukiyo-e's fading market into a new Japanese woodblock age.
