In Japanese Girls by Ide Tama River, Utagawa Kuniyoshi stops an 1847 spring afternoon as one friend hauls another through the current. An indigo-and-ivory tenugui pulls tight between their fists like a cotton bridge.

Kōka-era censors stamped their round seals on this design before any sheet sold. Edo’s Tenpō Reforms had outlawed prints of courtesans and kabuki stars, so Utagawa Kuniyoshi went hunting for beauty elsewhere.

Kerria gold crowds the air. Yamabuki thickets made this stream famous in waka poetry. Court poets counted it among the Six Jewel Rivers, a Yamashiro Province current praised for flowers and frogs. Kuniyoshi tucks those frogs beside the dry girl’s toes. Overhead, sakura froth against a bokashi sky.

The wader leans into the pull. Her plum-mauve kimono carries clamshell medallions in butter yellow, and a vermilion under-robe spills open at her knees. On the bank her companion braces in charcoal gray latticed with chalk-white leaves, a lilac obi knotted behind her. Amber kanzashi pin both lacquer-black chignons.

Ukiyo-e rarely laughs this openly. This Japanese woodblock print hands Edo period bijin-ga wet hems and a tug-of-war. Hair-thin strokes crown each rice-white face. Saffron pom-pom blooms repeat across this nishiki-e with no petal slipping its outline. Prussian blue eddies curl around two sunken feet, and the crossing never ends.

Origin Story

Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1798–1861) was ukiyo-e’s unruly visionary—a rebel printmaker who summoned warrior ghosts, cat parodies, kabuki dreams, and mythic beasts with equal fervor. Born to a silk-dyer in Edo, he fused wild storytelling with daring composition, pioneering triptychs, supernatural musha-e, and politically charged satirical prints that slipped past censors. His Suikoden heroes, tattooed and defiant, electrified a generation, while his phantasmagoric battles and sly caricatures shaped the DNA of manga and anime. A master of mood and motion, Kuniyoshi blurred the line between heroism and hallucination—leaving behind a legacy as bold and ungovernable as his art.

How to Hang your Artwork

1. D-rings (most secure)

Screw a D-ring onto the back of the frame on the left and right, both at the same height. A ruler helps here. Then put two screws in the wall where you want your canvas, level with each other and spaced the same distance apart as the D-rings. A spirit level makes this easier. Finally, hook the D-rings onto the screws.

How to Hang your Artwork

2. Straight onto screws

Keep it simple: put two screws in the wall at the same height and rest the inner lip at the top of the back of the frame on them.
