Okumura Masanobu rules every line toward one point, and the Nakamura-za theater in Edo tips forward into your lap. Rose-crimson pillars march inward. Mustard-ochre rafters cross above them, where two rows of paper lanterns hang with actor crests inked on their bellies. One carries three nested squares, the mimasu badge of the Ichikawa line.

Up in the box seats, women lean over rails draped in beni-pink cloth. Tokugawa law ranked merchants at the bottom of society, yet here the townspeople bought the best view in Edo. Kabuki ran on their coins and their gossip.

This is uki-e, the perspective picture the ukiyo-e publisher claimed as his own invention in the 1740s. Dutch and Chinese prints had slipped in through Nagasaki, and he stole their vanishing point for an oversized hand-colored woodblock print. Safflower beni floods the galleries. Indigo slate cools the ceiling boards.

Each beam aims at the gabled stage, a roof inside a roof borrowed from Noh. There Ichikawa Ebizo crouches in a latticed hut for Ya no ne Goro, grinding his giant arrowhead under a painted Mount Fuji. He is tiny. The kabuki playhouse swallows him and keeps pulling, plank after plank, until your own eye becomes the last ticket holder squeezed through the door.

Origin Story

Okumura Masanobu (1686–1764) was the Japanese print designer, painter, and publisher who kept ukiyo-e restless through its formative decades. Possibly Edo-born and self-taught, he watched the Torii school, absorbing Torii Kiyonobu I and Hishikawa Moronobu before drifting past both. His earliest surviving signed work, a 1701 album of Yoshiwara courtesans, appeared around age fifteen. Illustrated novels, puppet theatre librettos, and an eighteen-volume Tale of Genji followed, then comic albums parodying Noh and kabuki.

Around 1721 he opened Okumura-ya under a gourd-shaped sign and printed on his own terms. Brass powder turned ink to lacquer in his urushi-e woodblock prints. Uki-e perspective views pulled shop and theatre interiors into looming space. Credited with the pillar print, or hashira-e, he gave bijin-ga and actor portraits a flowing line, warm and humane.

Framed Art Prints

1. Vertical

Use the sawtooth hanger at the top middle on the back of the frame and hang it on a single screw or nail.

2. Horizontal

Hang the two sawtooth hangers on two screws or nails at the same heightPut two screws or nails in the wall at the same height, spaced the same distance apart as the two sawtooth hangers, then hang your print on them.

Framed Canvas

1. D-rings (most secure)

Screw a D-ring onto the back of the frame on the left and right, both at the same height. A ruler helps here. Then put two screws in the wall where you want your canvas, level with each other and spaced the same distance apart as the D-rings. A spirit level makes this easier. Finally, hook the D-rings onto the screws.

2. Straight onto screws

Keep it simple: put two screws in the wall at the same height and rest the inner lip at the top of the back of the frame on them.
