Félicien Rops (1833–1898) was Belgium’s prince of perversity—a Symbolist, a satirist, and a sorcerer of the printmaking press. Worshipped by Baudelaire, scorned by moralists, Rops blurred the sacred and profane with etchings that cavorted through decadence, eroticism, and social critique. From Pornocrates to Les Sataniques, his intaglio sorcery illustrated fin-de-siècle despair and pleasure in equal measure. A fixture of Paris’s bohemian salons, he designed for Mallarmé and Verlaine while scandalizing the bourgeoisie. Though branded a pornographer, Rops was a philosopher with a burin—his demons were metaphors, his femmes fatales mirrors. Today, his legacy lives on in Namur’s Musée Félicien Rops.
