In Egon Schiele's 1912 oil on canvas The Hermits, painted deep within the Vienna Expressionist circle, two men's hands meet at the waistline where their black robes seam together. Foreshortened and pale, one hand's fingers splay downward; the other curls beneath it, knuckles shaded in dull rose. This single point of touch is the only contact between figures otherwise erased into a shared column of coal-dark cloth.

Schiele's own face tilts forward, hair cropped and dark. Behind him the second head, likely Gustav Klimt, bears a mask-like complexion mottled in ochre and faded red, as though pigment itself had begun to decay. Rust-toned impasto builds the ground beneath their feet, rough and unfinished; a pale diagonal streak cuts the umber backdrop like a scythe.

In a letter to his patron Carl Reininghaus, Schiele described such figures as bodies tired of life, buckled under their own weight. Here the clasped hands carry that exhaustion, fingers curled around nothing but each other.

Origin Story

Egon Schiele—feral draftsman of raw anatomy and libidinal truth—slashed through Vienna’s secessionist corset with fingers dipped in rust and ruin.

Born 1890, baptized in Klimt’s shadow but unsaintly in gesture, he unzipped eroticism from propriety with every gaunt limb and gored contour.

His figures—skeletal, masturbatory, ravaged—speak in the dialect of decay and desire, defying bourgeois Vienna with incestuous ink and death-kissed palettes. Schiele didn’t paint bodies; he excavated the psyche’s pelvis, made portraiture bleed.

Jailed for obscenity and martyred by influenza at 28, he left behind a canon of contorted nudes, pubescent saints, and orgasmic ruin—each line a heresy, each stare a confession.
