About the Artwork
Great Tit on Paulownia Branch by Ohara Koson leans its small hunter into the cold. Head tilted, beak barely parted, the Japanese tit eyes a cluster of slate blue berries a hop away. Autumn has lit every leaf overhead. Persimmon orange pools along each vein.
Koson cut this kachō-e bird-and-flower design in interwar Tokyo, deep inside the shin-hanga movement that publisher Watanabe Shōzaburō steered toward American collectors. A cherry keyblock fixed each umber twig and its tiny thorns. The printer then rubbed bokashi gradation by hand, fading coral into pale apricot across the cream washi ground. Study the wing. Cobalt blue plumage barred in ink black repeats the berries in feathers.
Koson grew up in Kanazawa, a city of gold leaf and stroll gardens, and his birds always seem to wait. This one hangs a beat before the peck. Wrapped around this tough phone case, the Japanese woodblock print rides your pocket through November, a hungry guest leaning toward the last fruit of an orange year.
