Artwork Description

Pinks hang in suspension—ice cream cliffs melting into shale thoughts. Powell’s Grand Canyon floats, as if untethered from the American Southwest and repoured into dream geometry. Every ridge pulses with artificial hue, sherbet spun over sandstone, sienna etched with lilac ghosts. This is not cartography. It’s chromatic theatre. Tectonic drama.

Painted in the 1930s and reimagined as wearable art, this case carries New Deal modernism through a screen print lens: part WPA graphic, part dream-cartographer’s blueprint. The peach-toned ridges shimmer like sweet ice in summer twilight. Earth folds into geometric riddles. Jazz riffs in sediment.

This iPhone case is pigment archaeology. Layered like silt, heat, drought and the echoes of manifest destiny, travel posters, Depression-era muralism. The Grand Canyon becoming wearable memory in Powell's America, remixed: sentimental, stark, and impossibly sweet. A desert hymn reprinted in vinyl tones. Waiting to be carried like an everlasting postcard. Warped by sun and carved in shadow and sherbet.

Artist Biography

Chester Don Powell was an American artist and designer best remembered for his iconic WPA-era National Parks posters—vivid serigraphs that helped define the visual legacy of places like Yosemite, Yellowstone, and Zion.

Born in Kansas and trained in Chicago, Powell began his career in commercial illustration, working for companies like Wurlitzer before relocating to San Francisco in 1927. The Great Depression derailed his studio ambitions, but his talent found new purpose through the Works Progress Administration.

Initially a flagman on a road crew, Powell was soon reassigned to the National Park Service, where his posters transformed American landscapes into bold, modernist visions. After WWII shuttered the project, Powell shifted to marine drafting at Kaiser Shipyards and later pursued a diverse career spanning architectural design, silk-screen teaching, illustration, restoration, and theatrical set work.

Despite his far-reaching contributions, Powell died in obscurity. Yet his WPA prints endure as timeless tributes to the American wilderness and the quiet genius who gave it graphic form.
