About the Artwork
Frankenstein speaks German in the margins. Jim Thorpe sets the creature’s skull in profile on a marigold ground, every pen and ink line crosshatched into bone with the patience of a copperplate engraving. Small numerals pin the cheek and throat like specimen tags in an Ingolstadt dissecting room. Victor learned his trade in that Bavarian university town. Mary Shelley sent him there in 1818.
Then the eye. A ribbed capsule stamped with a Z sits in the socket, a clockwork lens built to see what flesh refused to show. Below the mandible, cogs lock into the cervical vertebrae. Galvanism made this fantasy plausible. Giovanni Aldini jolted a hanged man’s face into twitching in London in 1803, and the city flinched.
Under the jawbone, cursive German notes mention a Blick and a Maschine gone blind. Slate gray smudges drift across the amber field like ash from a lamp burning too long. This Frankenstein phone case carries a vintage anatomy plate in your pocket. The Modern Prometheus grins with every tooth, still waiting for the current.
