Midnight settles over the forest floor in Watanabe Seitei's Forest Illustration, and its white blossoms refuse the dark. Pearl blossoms gather in tight clusters, each pinned by a saffron stamen. Jade leaves fan out around them like a card player shielding a winning hand.

He trained in kachō-e bird-and-flower painting under Kikuchi Yōsai, then sailed for the 1878 Paris Exposition Universelle and came home fluent in japonisme from the other side. This Meiji-era woodblock print ran in Shin Bijutsukai, the Kyoto design journal from publisher Unsōdō, as a pattern model for kimono dyers.
