Flower Cart - Katsushika Hokusai Fine Art Print / Canvas

Katsushika Hokusai's flower cart, pulled from his 1814 Album of Sketches, offers only a fragment of a courtly gosho-guruma, and the fragment is the whole story. Sixteen black lacquer spokes turn around a hub petaled in vermilion and rose madder, a wheel built for procession, now abandoned mid-route.

Peonies spill over the cart's rim like an argument that refuses to end quietly, their ruffled pink faces pressed against rust-toned chrysanthemums and small red camellias. Bamboo grass blades stretch rightward in loose calligraphic strokes, ink-thin, reaching past the flowers toward an empty shaft. That shaft angles up, crossed by one taut cord, drawn tight as a held note. 

Below the wheel, braided rope with bulbous tassels loosens into slack coils on bare paper, the cart's puller gone, the load left mid-journey through some unnamed Edo street. Hokusai paints motion without a mover. Ochre undertone, ink-black rim, cream ground hold the fragment together.

Years before Fugaku's wave broke across Kanagawa, this cart holds a different stillness, caught mid-roll, flowers heavier than the wheel beneath them.
