In Tago No Ura No Yube (Evening at Tago Bay), Hasui Kawase lets Mount Fuji breathe in full color. Across this Samsung case’s surface, its slopes are veined with dusk. The farmer, bent to his load, steps across golden reeds, his small figure echoing the enormity of Fuji’s stillness. 

Pared branches etch silhouettes, a black ink lattice holding the pale sky. Kawase’s shin-hanga artistry heightens each tone: violet snows, soft umber fields, translucent air shifting toward night. The composition folds memory and movement, Edo woodblock lineage brushed with modern sensibility.

About the Artist

Hasui Kawase (1883–1957) was Japan’s great poet of place, etching twilight rivers, temple courtyards, and snow-laden lanes into the soul of modern printmaking. A master of the shin-hanga movement, he fused ukiyo-e tradition with Western naturalism, creating nearly 1,000 woodblock prints shimmering with atmosphere, moonlight, and rain. Born in Tokyo, Hasui abandoned his family’s trade after its collapse to study art under Kiyokata Kaburagi, who gave him the name “Hasui”—“water gushing from a spring.” Collaborating with publisher Shōzaburō Watanabe, Hasui redefined landscape art for Japan’s new century. Revered abroad, crowned a Living National Treasure in 1956, his prints endure as lyrical windows into a vanishing Japan.
