About the Artwork
A horned priest crowns the mound, torches upraised, their smoke braiding with clouds. Below him, witches and chimeras spiral in a fever of bodies and tails. Bayard translates medieval terror into modern spectacle, his etching needle sharper than any sermon.
The horizon tilts—trees sway like witnesses to madness. A noose-shaped structure waits beyond the altar, reminder of penalty after pleasure. Every texture breeds contrast: the gleam of torch against matte night, the curl of hair against scaled hide.
Here the nineteenth century confesses its fascination with forbidden ritual, turning witchcraft into artistic science. Bayard renders sin with technical devotion, his acid etch a mirror of moral smoke.
