Karl Wiener stops Destruction one step early, with a jet black giant caught mid-stride above a town that fits under his sole. Hold that step.

Look up. Five spikes crown the head, and beneath them sits a coin-sized face, sulfur-bright and scowling. One eye is a slash. The arms taper into fins with no hands to plead with, and the sky around them burns in streaky burnt sienna.

Below, the rooftops huddle. Wiener boxes each house in an India ink contour, then floods the cells with watercolor, apricot beside straw. Along the skyline a few gables point upward. His standing limb has already sunk among the rest.

He made this sheet in the Austrian city of Graz in 1924, the year he started art school, raised by a father who worked at the Social Democratic daily Arbeiterwille. Austria’s First Republic was six years old. Paramilitaries drilled in the Styrian hills. This Austrian Expressionist art print holds the interwar second before impact, and the heel stays raised over whatever room you give it.

Origin Story

Karl Wiener (1901–1949) was the Austrian painter and graphic artist whose socially charged modernism never quite found its market. Raised in a Graz social-democratic family, he studied at the state art school, the Vienna School of Applied Arts under Berthold Löffler, and the Academy under Rudolf Jettmar. Travel and scholarship exposed him to international movements; his early work absorbed New Objectivity and Expressionism, echoing George Grosz, John Heartfield, Otto Dix, and Kurt Schwitters. He made strikingly early collages, hinting at later Pop Art, while pen-and-ink "grotesques" fused war's horror, Nazi rule, and private despair into visions of warning.

Earning his living as a teacher and graphic designer, he survived the Nazi era in obscurity. A lifelong preoccupation with suicide haunted him; dismissed in 1947, he killed himself in his Vienna studio in 1949.

2. Horizontal

Hang the two sawtooth hangers on two screws or nails at the same heightPut two screws or nails in the wall at the same height, spaced the same distance apart as the two sawtooth hangers, then hang your print on them.

How to Hang your Artwork

1. D-rings (most secure)

Screw a D-ring onto the back of the frame on the left and right, both at the same height. A ruler helps here. Then put two screws in the wall where you want your canvas, level with each other and spaced the same distance apart as the D-rings. A spirit level makes this easier. Finally, hook the D-rings onto the screws.

How to Hang your Artwork

2. Straight onto screws

Keep it simple: put two screws in the wall at the same height and rest the inner lip at the top of the back of the frame on them.
