In Petrarch’s Triumphs, Time rolls over Fame and everything before it. In Titian’s Cupid with the Wheel of Time a barefoot boy argues back, both fists clamped on a cartwheel nearly his own height. Pewter light pools across his belly. Wings flare in ash-gray quills.

Young Titian worked this in monochrome oils around 1515, a few years after Giorgione’s death left Venice to him. Loose brushwork drags pale pigment over a sooty ground until skin and cloud share one smoky fog. A veil of transparent gauze knots at his hip and whips sideways. Bare toes grip a stone ledge in a wind no one can see.

At right an equine skull hangs from a tree, plumed like a parade horse that outran its rider centuries ago. Ribbons coil from its brow toward the putto’s ear. Italian High Renaissance painters loved this pairing of infant flesh and bone, a vanitas staged in chiaroscuro and olive umber.

This memento mori grins through umber shadow, a vanitas riddle on its teeth. Eros answering with bare arms and sheer drapery streaming loose at the hip as the Wheel of Fortune shudders on its soot-black hub.

Origin Story

Titian (Tiziano Vecellio, c. 1488/90–1576) was the Venetian Renaissance painter who let colour do the thinking. Born in Pieve di Cadore, beneath the Dolomites, he trained in Venice under Giovanni Bellini and worked beside Giorgione on the Fondaco dei Tedeschi frescoes, soon outshining both. His Assumption of the Virgin for Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari lifted the Venetian School skyward, and in 1516 he became official painter to the Republic.

Courts competed for his brush. Charles V named him Count Palatine; Philip II commissioned the poesie, sensual mythologies including Venus and Adonis and Rape of Europa. From Sacred and Profane Love to Venus of Urbino and Bacchus and Ariadne, his oil on canvas glowed with flesh, velvet and dusk. Late works such as the Pietà dissolve form into rough, smouldering strokes, a lesson Rubens, Velázquez and Rembrandt never forgot.

How to Hang your Artwork

1. D-rings (most secure)

Screw a D-ring onto the back of the frame on the left and right, both at the same height. A ruler helps here. Then put two screws in the wall where you want your canvas, level with each other and spaced the same distance apart as the D-rings. A spirit level makes this easier. Finally, hook the D-rings onto the screws.

How to Hang your Artwork

2. Straight onto screws

Keep it simple: put two screws in the wall at the same height and rest the inner lip at the top of the back of the frame on them.
