About the Artwork

Crystalline gathers its title from a nineteenth-century mineralogical specimen plate, a chromolithograph built for taxonomic reference but too beautiful to be so limited.

The plate's numbered discipline belongs to an era that treated naming the earth's materials as a form of intellectual possession. Where specimens were isolated on blank grounds and keyed by numeral so a reader could cross-reference stones older than any system built to sort them.

Numeral four marks the plate's central drama: a coarse-textured host rock cradling elongated crystals of striated dark green-black, angled like a fist of splintered glass caught mid-fracture. Beside the cluster, one small hexagonal-faceted crystal in pale green sits half-buried, easy to miss at a glance. To its right, unlabeled, an iridescent sphere holds a pearlescent sheen that shifts from blue to lilac to peach as light moves across the page.

Cream paper surrounds each specimen with open space. Surviving now as dreamy scientific illustration, cut loose from whatever taxonomic caption once explained it inside some vanished encyclopedic reference work.

Origin Story

Georges Pouchet (1833–1894) was a French naturalist and anatomist whose exacting eye also shaped the printed image. Born in Rouen to naturalist Félix Archimède Pouchet, he trained at the Muséum national d'Histoire Naturelle in Paris, rising to its chair of comparative anatomy in 1879. Renowned for his studies of cetacean anatomy and fish embryology at the Concarneau laboratory, Pouchet extended his scientific draftsmanship into popular science: his design for "Le microscope appliqué à l'étude des minéraux," lithographed in color by Antoine Pralon, translated crystalline structures into striking visual form.

A friend of Flaubert and Maupassant, who dedicated a story to him, Pouchet moved fluently between laboratory and literary Paris, writing for La Revue des Deux Mondes and Le Temps. His polar expeditions to Svalbard and Lapland, and his illustrated scientific plates, place him among the era's rare figures who rendered the natural world with both a scholar's rigor and a draftsman's precision.
