Giclée Printing

Count Dracula opens their mouth and Bram Stoker’s old man climbs back out of the 1897 novel. Jess Franco’s film was sold on that loyalty. Here he is, silver hair raked off the brow in dry pen strokes above a drooping chalk-white mustache. Christopher Lee had worn Hammer’s cape since 1958 with a shaved lip.

Two cadmium-red irises break the pewter grisaille first. Each carries a pinprick of bone white, a projector lamp caught in a predator’s stare. Then the fangs. Arterial crimson coats both lips and spills off one corner in thick enamel runs toward the chin.

That spill is the whole plot of this vampire art print. In Franco’s gothic horror the Count grows younger with each feeding, so that ash wash is a before picture. It reached West German cinemas in April 1970 through producer Harry Alan Towers. Bruno Nicolai scored it, and Herbert Lom’s Van Helsing gave chase. Hang the bodiless head on lamp black where evening light finds it. The old Transylvanian nobleman is still waiting for his close-up.
