About This Phone Case
Pierre Larousse's champignon plate, engraved for his Grand Dictionnaire Universel, scatters dozens of numbered fungal specimens across a cream background the way a nineteenth-century naturalist might pin moths beneath glass.
Number eleven crouches low in rust-red clusters at grass level; number twenty-eight lifts into a slate-gray parasol wide enough to shade its neighbors, and number sixty-seven sits apart as a pale sphere with nothing but empty paper around it. Mycology in this era leaned on exactly this kind of comparative grid, part of a nineteenth-century push to make natural knowledge visually classifiable at a glance.
Lithographic linework stays fine and unshaded here, letting watercolor washes carry the identification work photography would later inherit. Bulbous stipes swell beneath specimen eighteen, the same volva structure still used to key out Amanita species today. Reading the plate left to right feels less like admiring art than learning, specimen by specimen, to separate one gilled cap from the next on sight.
