About the Artwork

Pale eyes widen at something beyond the lens, and a full beard spills beneath them to the lapels. Among victorian gay photography, this nineteenth century portrait keeps the brow of Captain Moonlite lifted mid-question between the bushranger's wave of side-parted hair and the heavy buttons of his double-breasted coat.

Walnut shadow pools under the collar. In 1868, Captain Moonlite (Andrew George Scott) served at Bacchus Marsh as an Anglican lay reader, and a Mount Egerton bank robbery accusation in 1869, which he denied to the end, closed that road.

Here and now, Scott's story is In a colonial record of gay male love. At Wantabadgery on 15 November 1879 his gang held the station, and a farmhouse standoff left his lover James Nesbitt dead with Moonlite captured.

By the usual account, Captain Moonlite wore a ring of woven hair from Nesbitt to Darlinghurst Gaol on 20 January 1880, a Victorian keepsake craft carried to the last morning. And his last letters turned on love: he wrote from the condemned cell that James Nesbitt's grave would be his resting place, and since 1995 he has lain near it at Gundagai.

Captain Moonlite awaits your office wall as a Victorian studio portrait, where a steady stare keeps a love story in view.

Origin Story

Andrew George Scott (1842–1880), the bushranger known as Captain Moonlite, was born in Rathfriland, Ireland, the son of an Anglican clergyman, and trained as an engineer in London. In New Zealand he fought at Orakau, then drifted to Victoria, where he served as a lay reader before masking himself for the 1869 Mount Egerton bank robbery. Prison, escape, and a celebrity lecture circuit on prison reform followed, staged with theatrical self-possession.

In 1879 he led a gang of young men through Victoria and New South Wales, ending in the Wantabadgery siege near Gundagai. Condemned, he wrote death-cell letters professing his love for James Nesbitt, shot dead in that siege, and was hanged at Darlinghurst Gaol in 1880. In 1995 his remains were reburied beside Nesbitt at Gundagai, graves now listed on the State Heritage Register.
