About the Artwork

Two chalk-pale butterflies drift through inked darkness in William Baxter Closson's wood engraving, their veined wings catching what little light escapes the cross-hatched void. Below, wild grasses bend under invisible weight, wheat-heads nodding beside clustered meadow blooms.

Closson cuts each line with the precision of a Boston-trained engraver, building tone through accumulated strokes that conjure twilight atmosphere on boxwood block. The charcoal field presses close, suffused with the silvered grain of turned fiber. Here is no botanical specimen, but the fleeting presence of Lepidoptera suspended between dusk and disappearance.

Late nineteenth-century American printmaking finds its quietest voice in this sepia reverie, where the wild meadow exhales and winged visitors hover on the edge of being seen before dissolving back into velvet shadow.

Artist Biography

William Baxter Palmer Closson (1848–1926) was an American painter and wood engraver whose art bridged print and paint with lyrical precision. Born in Thetford, Vermont, to a legislator father and a mother descended from painter Benjamin West, Closson began as a railroad clerk before apprenticing under engraver Samuel Smith Kilburn in Boston. His engravings for Harper’s Magazine honed the finesse later seen in his luminous canvases. A close contemporary of George Fuller, Closson’s works—now held at the Smithsonian, Wadsworth Atheneum, and Cleveland Museum of Art—capture the quiet grace of late-19th-century American realism with reflective, devotional calm.
