About the Artwork
Wild grasses bow beneath a soot-dark sky, and two pale butterflies materialize like half-remembered visitors in William Baxter Closson's wood engraving. The Boston engraver carves his meadow with meticulous burin strokes—wheat stalks, clustered blossoms, and seed-tufted stems building a nocturnal prairie where flora thickens toward charcoal obscurity.
Closson's late nineteenth-century technique harnesses crosshatched tonality to summon atmosphere rather than description. The ivory-winged Lepidoptera hover at the threshold of visibility, their vein patterns etched against the inked expanse like fleeting signals from a twilight garden. Sepia warmth bleeds through the engraving's carbon shadows, lending the composition a Tonalist quietude.
