About the Artwork

Two pale wings rise from shadow, trembling above a tangle of meadow stems. The etching’s velvety gloom feels alive with motion too slight to see—flutter, hush, retreat.

Light clings to each butterfly as though memory itself had learned to hover. Closson’s precision burns through the darkness: the serrated grasses, the thin filaments of seedheads, every blade engraved with the care of someone who understood quiet.

A nocturne in graphite, this print translates stillness into a slow pulse. What begins as mere observation—two insects caught mid-air—turns into a meditation on impermanence, the way form fades into texture, and texture into air.

Artist Biography

William Baxter Palmer Closson (1848–1926) was an American painter and wood engraver whose art bridged print and paint with lyrical precision. Born in Thetford, Vermont, to a legislator father and a mother descended from painter Benjamin West, Closson began as a railroad clerk before apprenticing under engraver Samuel Smith Kilburn in Boston. His engravings for Harper’s Magazine honed the finesse later seen in his luminous canvases. A close contemporary of George Fuller, Closson’s works—now held at the Smithsonian, Wadsworth Atheneum, and Cleveland Museum of Art—capture the quiet grace of late-19th-century American realism with reflective, devotional calm.
