Katsushika Hokusai's Bullfinch and Weeping Cherry sets a coral-throated songbird against a Prussian-blue field so saturated it swallows the horizon whole. This bird-and-flower print, drawn from the Small Flowers series late in Hokusai's Edo-period career, trades Mount Fuji's peaks for one curving branch.

Five-petaled cherry blossoms open in ivory clusters, each rim blushed pink, each center ringed in pale-yellow stamen dust, tracking the weeping cherry's fall from bud to open flower along gray-green bark. The bullfinch turns its black-capped head from the viewer, cheek burning coral against a dove-gray back, claws hooked around the branch as spring settles into stillness.

Imported Berlin blue, prized in nineteenth-century Japan for depth no local indigo could match, floods the paper until the branch seems to hover in open air. Two vermilion seals and a column of brush-inked kyoka verse ground the scene in its own historical moment, a woodblock print built layer upon layer by Edo artisans.

Bullfinch, cherry and ink column share one plane. And Japonisme collectors later chased this bird-and-flower balance: one creature, one blooming branch, one boundless field of blue holding everything still.

Origin Story

Katsushika Hokusai, born in 1760, was a master of ukiyo-e whose influence shaped Japanese art and captivated audiences worldwide.

Renowned for his dynamic compositions and vivid details, Hokusai's work transcended traditional ukiyo-e, imbuing nature and daily life with a powerful narrative quality. His iconic series, "Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji," portrayed the sacred mountain as both a majestic natural feature and a symbol deeply embedded in Japanese culture.

Hokusai's innovative approach blended the sublime with the everyday, pushing the boundaries of visual storytelling and leaving a profound legacy that continues to resonate within the world of art today.

How to Hang your Artwork

1. D-rings (most secure)

Screw a D-ring onto the back of the frame on the left and right, both at the same height. A ruler helps here. Then put two screws in the wall where you want your canvas, level with each other and spaced the same distance apart as the D-rings. A spirit level makes this easier. Finally, hook the D-rings onto the screws.

How to Hang your Artwork

2. Straight onto screws

Keep it simple: put two screws in the wall at the same height and rest the inner lip at the top of the back of the frame on them.
