Black Swallow - Taguchi Tomoki Fine Art Print / Canvas

A single black swallow breaks from Yatsuo no Tsubaki and lands here as ink-black shorthand, its whole body reduced by Taguchi Tomoki to shape, gap, and blade-edge feather.

Nothing about the Black Swallow print is drawn; it is cut, block by block, from wood that no longer exists, then pressed into bone-pale paper until sumi ink soaked into every fiber the carver spared. Long tail streamers stretch behind the bird's raised wing, crossing like two strokes of a brush that ran out of patience for detail. 

Mid-nineteenth-century print houses worked this way on purpose, letting negative space carry as much weight as ink itself, so a viewer's eye completes the flight the wood block only started. Look closely at the mottled grain along each feather tip and you can trace the actual pressure of a hand-pulled print, uneven in places, alive in ways a flawless copy could never manage.

Late Edo Japan trained its printers to say everything with restraint, and this swallow obeys that discipline, holding its whole flight path in negative space. Hang it where morning light crosses a wall and the bird seems to keep moving, decades after the block that carved it was retired.
