Bird and Persimmon - Katsushika Hokusai Fine Art Print / Canvas
Katsushika Hokusai's bird from Album of Sketches, 1814, twists its crested skull backward on a slender persimmon branch, catching a wash of autumn light across brown and ochre feathers.
Sumi ink builds the plumage in patient layers, a russet mantle giving way to a cream-white throat, the belly deepening into egg-yolk ochre near the legs. The tail unspools last, a single umber-tan ribbon stretching far past the bird's own length, drifting toward the paper's foot.
Pale slate-blue bars stripe the folded wing coverts, echoing ink-black persimmon leaves that hang just beneath the claws. The fruit glowing rust-red and heavy, freckled with charcoal blemishes, its skin swollen with late-season ripeness.
This sketchbook page belongs to Edo-period kachō-ga, the bird-and-flower tradition that trained generations of ukiyo-e artists in close observation before grand composition. Foxed grain still marks the mulberry paper two centuries on, and the crest lifts, mid-turn, as if the branch had only just stopped swaying.
