His robe falls loose at the shoulder, revealing skin caught between shadow and candlelight. Grapes, figs, and the sheen of overripe pears swell across the stone ledge, a pomegranate split open beside the bruised apple.
Painted around 1596 for Cardinal Del Monte, the work hints at humanist circles where myth was not distant story but living flesh. Whether muse or model, the boy’s gaze catches the viewer in an intimate conspiracy. Baroque drama condensed into fruit, wine and the suggestion of surrender.
