Caravaggio's Bacchus, painted c. 1596–97 and held in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, seats the Roman god of wine at the razor-edge between abundance and dissolution. Caravaggio pulling a Roman studio model — rumored to be his companion Mario Minniti — into the role of deity.

Vine-leaf crown tilting slightly, wide coupe glass proffered with the practiced looseness of someone who has drunk from it already. Tenebrism sculpting ivory-cream flesh against an umber-brown ground, the chiaroscuro pressing each shoulder forward into nearly tactile relief.

The off-white linen drape, knotted with a black ribbon, anchors the god's sensuality in something deliberately undone — half-clothed, half-revealed, the deep crimson wine inside the coupe glass held steady while everything else in the scene quietly ripens.

The Italian Baroque still-life tradition remodelled as seduction.

Origin Story

Born Michelangelo Merisi, Caravaggio crashed into the late Italian Renaissance like a lit match in a wine cellar—blazing, brutal, and exquisitely precise.

His canvases unleashed saints as street kids, apostles as bruised brawlers, and divine ecstasy with homoerotic classical art heat. Like a knife-wielding fugitive and patron-seducing genius, he painted death and desire with equal devotion. Bleeding with Baroque god drama and chiaroscuro’s violent light.

His queer art wasn’t whispered—it strutted, smirked, stared you down. Every painting a theater, every model a mirror. Caravaggio didn’t paint ideals; he painted truth—raw, carnal, flickering with vanitas symbolism, and always lit like the end of the world.

How to Hang your Artwork

1. D-rings (most secure)

Screw a D-ring onto the back of the frame on the left and right, both at the same height. A ruler helps here. Then put two screws in the wall where you want your canvas, level with each other and spaced the same distance apart as the D-rings. A spirit level makes this easier. Finally, hook the D-rings onto the screws.

2. Straight onto screws

Keep it simple: put two screws in the wall at the same height and rest the inner lip at the top of the back of the frame on them.
