About the Artwork
Autumn Hills by Kamisaka Sekka pours a Kyoto October across this tough phone case. Vermilion maple leaves crowd the left bank in star-shaped clusters. Each leaf carries a thinner coral outline, so the grove looks pressed flat like leaves kept inside a poetry book. Across the water a jade-green slope climbs to the right edge, its crest fringed with foliage edged in pale aqua.
Sekka carried the Rinpa school into Meiji-era Kyoto with a designer’s eye. He traveled to Glasgow in 1901 to study European decoration, and Art Nouveau curves seem to meet Ogata Korin’s flat color fields in this woodblock print.
The river itself is bare parchment. It bends in slow S-curves, and pockets of momiji float inside it like cut-paper islands. Bokashi gradation warms the sky to a peach blush. At the bottom edge, reed stems drawn in ink lean into a rose-tinted bank where momijigari crowds once walked.
Slip it into your hand and the hillside keeps its fire, coral leaves drifting on a parchment river that never meets winter.
