About the Artist

Hans Thoma (1839–1924) painted the Black Forest not as it was, but as a dream remembered—precise, pastoral, myth-touched. Born to a miller and trained by a clock-face painter, his work fused childhood idylls with Renaissance mysticism, echoing Cranach and Altdorfer in every carefully etched line. Thoma resisted Realism’s grip, favoring instead a Pre-Raphaelite intimacy with nature: local color, lyrical outline, folkish reverie. Though once overlooked, his reputation soared after a Munich exhibition, his art later co-opted by the Nazis—its sentimental nationalism twisted to darker ends. Yet beneath the politics, Thoma remained a weaver of timeless, enchanted stillness.
