About the Artist

Franz Marc (1880–1916) was a German painter and printmaker, known for his vibrant portrayals of animals.

As a founding member of Der Blaue Reiter, Marc played a pivotal role in shaping German Expressionism, using bright colors and bold forms to convey emotional and spiritual themes.

Marc's mature works focused on animals, reflecting his belief in their purity and connection to nature. Drafted during World War I, he tragically died at the Battle of Verdun in 1916.

Despite being labeled a degenerate artist by the Nazis in the 1930s, much of his work survived, cementing his legacy through rediscovery in the decades that followed WWII.
