Origin Story

Jan van de Velde the Younger (1593–c.1641) was a Dutch Golden Age printmaker whose etchings turned the landscapes of Haarlem into poetry etched in acid and copper. Born in Delft or Rotterdam to the calligrapher Jan van de Velde the Elder, he apprenticed under Jacob Matham before joining the Haarlem Guild in 1614. His mastery of line and atmosphere elevated everyday horizons—windmills, dunes, and church spires—into meditations on motion and stillness. Though he painted, his genius lived in print, where ink became wind, and crosshatching felt like weather. His Views of Haarlem captured not just a city, but the spirit of a new Dutch identity—precise, luminous, and quietly infinite.
