About the Artist

Jean Restout II (1692–1768), painter of the French Baroque, twisted brush into a fervent hymn to mythic gesture and mortal ache. Son of an artistic dynasty, Restout moved beyond the polite lyricism of courtly France, tearing into canvas and charcoal with Dionysian hunger.

His figures—muscles coiled in perpetual climax—loomed large, lit by the cold sun of classical form and the sweaty theatre of human myth. Shadows etched in Parisian salons, Restout’s nudes twisted and rose like wine-dark prayers to antiquity, swirling in chiaroscuro fevers.

In his hands, history became a lithe satyr, both devotional and debauched, sanctified and profane.
