Christophe-Philippe Oberkampf founded Oberkampf & Cie in Jouy-en-Josas, near Paris. The factory quickly gained a reputation for its high-quality patterned fabrics, attracting affluent clients from the nearby court.

Oberkampf, raised in the textile industry, used innovative techniques to create the iconic "Toile de Jouy" patterns, which featured pastoral scenes and intricate designs.
