About this Artwork
Johann David Herz's Young, Naked Man with a Wreathed Head declares itself through the architecture of the back. This circa-1732 Augsburg engraving turns the body into exploration: every burin crosshatch line a proof drawn across skin, the torsion of the lumbar spine narrating its own weight. Academic nude study in eighteenth-century Germany bore the pressure of the Italian Grand Tour — anatomy as theology — and Herz, working as both draftsman and printmaker, fused those imperatives into a single copper plate.
The trapezius crests in near-white highlight, then plunges into carbon-black shadow wells that hollow the armpit and bracket the seated hip. Scapular ridge articulation carries the drama: two blades winged apart by the arm's reach, the deltoid's far edge dissolving where background crosshatch closes in. Warm cream-toned paper glows beneath the ink, the figure breathing against it.
That laurel wreath — dense, leaf-specific, pressed tight to the crown — pulls the anonymous model into classical male nude iconography, the prize already placed on a head we cannot see.
