About this Artwork
Marsden Hartley's Young Hunter Hearing Call to Arms settles its full weight into one detail: a heap of gold-tan antlers cradled against a woolen hip, tines curling like question marks against olive cloth.
Hartley, returned to Maine after years among the Berlin officer portraits and Parisian Cubists, folds that European schooling into a New England archetype, a hunter built from flat coral-pink planes and black contour lines thick as rope. The rifle barrel drops as a single black stroke beside the antlers, more accessory than weapon here.
Red coat, teal vest wedge, ruffled white collar: each block of color reads as costume for a ritual older than the canvas itself, a woodland rite staged among birch trunks scraped white against char-dark ground. Down at his boots, a leaf-trimmed cap and a split hoof complete an offering laid out for no one but the birches. But the antlers hold the eye longest, gold curling into olive, trophy and burden both.
