About This Phone Case
This writing-box design of moon and waves fixes on a black moon disc slipping behind a wall of gold water, the pattern now carried on this sleek phone case centuries after it first crossed a suzuribako lid.
This writing box design once held an inkstone and a water dropper beside sticks of ground ink for an Edo-period scholar's desk. Gold-sprinkled powder crusts the sky in a fine nashiji ground, each fleck settled the way tsukimi guests once scattered grain under an autumn moon.
A curling wave crest rises below in tight black striations, gold linework combing through the crown of every swell. The moon does not vanish so much as get held, caught in the suspended half-visibility older convention calls mono no aware, a shape the wave's own crest pins mid-arc. Small silver-grey dots ride the foam like scattered mica across a dark tide.
Nothing here finishes falling. Lacquer craft in Japanese decorative arts made careers from this single collision of sky and surge, the veiled moon disc caught forever between one wave and the next. The wave holding its collapse forever, gold caught mid-curl against the dark.
