Its crown of foliage belies nothing; this is no pastoral deity, but a siphon for submission. Naked shoulders slump toward it, drawn by unseen contracts.
One crone suckles an infant, perhaps a replacement for one devoured. Elsewhere, miniature corpses dangle like discarded toys. The wind is thick with superstition, as flying figures slash through the clouds—harbingers or hallucinations. This is not narrative, but reckoning: a portrait of rural Spain’s fevered anxieties around heresy, infanticide, and femininity untethered.
Goya paints terror as theater: staged, feral, and intimate. The witches are not monsters. They are the ones with ears to the dark. And the Sabbath? It’s a mirror, cracked with centuries of dread.
