About the Artwork

A slender tower catches a band of gold above a staircase of lilac rooftops, and Théo van Rysselberghe puts down what a visitor to Meknès sees first. He steps the terraces down in periwinkle, cream and pale violet toward a plain that melts into a long blue distance patched with green.

The plain beyond the roofs is the Saïss, one of Morocco's richest farming plains, planted with olives and grain, and its green patches flicker through the blue of the distance. A tower with a rust-pink cap rises at the center. Two small figures in blue stand together near the lower right, and a white wall flickers with pink at the right margin.

Meknès is one of Morocco's four imperial cities, made a capital in the seventeenth century by Sultan Moulay Ismail. Rysselberghe was here in December 1887 with a Belgian mission to the sultan's court, and Edmond Picard's account of the trip, El Moghreb Al Aksa, would carry such sketches. Within a year van Rysselberghe would adopt Seurat's broken touch, and here the first signs appear: strokes stay separate for the eye to blend.

View of Meknes, Morocco awaits your living room or bedroom as a neo-Impressionist rooftop painting, where a tower of rose and gold lifts out of a mosaic of haze.

Origin Story

Théo van Rysselberghe (1862–1926) was a Belgian Neo-Impressionist painter whose canvases hold the heat of the Mediterranean in a lattice of colour. Born in Ghent and trained at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels, he travelled through Spain and Morocco in the 1880s, where Tangier’s harsh sun fixed his preoccupation with light. In 1883 he co-founded Les XX, the Brussels avant-garde circle, and helped shape La Libre Esthétique.

After encountering Georges Seurat’s A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte in 1886, he adopted Pointillism, applying it to portraits, including The Reading, and to seascapes along the Scheldt and Mediterranean coast. Friendships with Paul Signac, Henri-Edmond Cross and André Gide threaded Brussels to Paris. Settling at Saint-Clair near Le Lavandou, he loosened his dots into broader strokes, painting bathers beneath pines until his death.
