An amber moon burns through sulfur-green cloud, and the vampire bats comes to supper. Gaston Vuillier drew this night around 1890, seven years before Bram Stoker published Dracula. Three sleeping men lie on a plank veranda in the tropical Americas, the only region these animals call home.

Count the diners. One bat sits low on a bare chest and opens the skin over the breastbone. A second feeds at a throat, with a third waiting on a hip wrapped in bone-white cloth. Nobody wakes. Their saliva keeps the cut from clotting, and each animal laps at the flow.

Vuillier was a French illustrator and traveler from Perpignan who drew for the Paris travel journal Le Tour du Monde. Half a century earlier, Darwin’s servant had pulled one of these bats off a horse’s withers in Chile. This color-washed wood engraving turns that field note into a house call.

Hang the vintage natural history art print above a desk, in a cabinet of curiosities or a hallway that needs a pulse. Its indigo sky stays loud forever against lamp-black lines. And look past the palm trunks... a dozen more are flying in over the treetops.

Origin Story

Gaston Charles Vuillier (1845–1915) was the French painter, designer, traveller, and ethnographer who made the world his subject. Born in Perpignan and raised in Aude, he abandoned law and notary work for the École des Beaux-Arts de Marseille, then Paris studies under Emmanuel Lansyer. Service in Algeria sealed his calling to paint. Hired in 1878 by Maison Hachette as an illustrator for Le Tour du monde and Le Monde illustré, he roamed Europe, befriending Archduke Ludwig Salvator and collaborating with folklorist Giuseppe Pitré—encounters that bred a lifelong ethnographic passion.

Settling in Gimel-les-Cascades in 1892, he championed its waterfalls, blocking a dam, and wrote Dance Through the Ages (1898) and Pleasures and Games (1900). He died there in 1915.

How to Hang your Artwork

1. D-rings (most secure)

Screw a D-ring onto the back of the frame on the left and right, both at the same height. A ruler helps here. Then put two screws in the wall where you want your canvas, level with each other and spaced the same distance apart as the D-rings. A spirit level makes this easier. Finally, hook the D-rings onto the screws.

How to Hang your Artwork

2. Straight onto screws

Keep it simple: put two screws in the wall at the same height and rest the inner lip at the top of the back of the frame on them.
