About This Artwork
Afternoon heat ripples through Henri Edmond Cross's Two Women by the Shore, each divisionist speck a thermal pulse. Painted in Saint-Clair around 1906, the scene pools ultramarine shadow at the women's feet while cadmium and saffron explode overhead in wind-twisted pines.
Cross's technique—small tessellated strokes building toward optical mixture—transforms the Var coastline into stained glass without lead. One woman reclines in blush-pink, the other rises in slate-blue gauze, their stillness framed by viridian underbrush and the stippled teal expanse stretching toward Cap Nègre.
