The Yellow River - Fukuda Bisen iPhone Case

$45USD

Mist bleeds through mountain clefts, interrupted only by the curling brushwork of Bisen’s imagined currents. His Yellow River isn't named for pigment, it’s named for density, for weight, for the slow gravity of a river cutting through dynastic spines. Every curve of this print recalls China’s long tradition of fūkeiga. Landscape not as record, but as revelation.

Topography has been unstitched and rethreaded into form here. Hills undulate like folded silk, studded with pavilions that jut from the earth like ritual pins. A pale valley arcs diagonally, flanked by brush fields and dwarfed pagodas painted in mineral blue and malachite green. It’s cartography transformed into choreography. The swirling cloud banks function as absences—lacunae that animate the flow.

Ink was water once. Paper was forest. And now they've transformed again into armor for glass and circuitry. Each gentle bend, every gradation of moss-green to bottle-glass turquoise, distills the logic of Qing-era terrain painting into portable, pixelated form.

Artist Biography

Fukuda Bisen (福田眉仙, 1875–1963) traced mountains not just with ink, but with memory, migration, and reverence. Born in Hyōgo’s coastal Akō district, he left for Tokyo at sixteen to study under Kubota Beisen and Hashimoto Gahō—masters of Meiji-era Nihonga. His vision stretched further east: in 1900, he journeyed to China and later Korea, absorbing the literati landscapes that would shape his contemplative style.

Known for his ethereal landscapes and painterly screens—notably for Kyoto’s Daikaku-ji and Jingo-ji—Bisen bridged Japanese, Chinese, and Korean aesthetics without allegiance to any school but nature. His brush held silence, his prints, a kind of breathless distance. Though his fame remained largely domestic, postwar years found him retreating to Ashiya, near Kyoto, where he painted in seclusion until his death in Kurakuen Park.
