From that slow carving rose The Witches’ Procession, the strange Roman print scholars call Lo Stregozzo, credited to Agostino Veneziano and Marcantonio Raimondi. Collectors passed impressions of it across sixteenth-century Europe. The lines still feel sharp enough to draw blood.
Artists of the Italian Renaissance learned anatomy over candlelit dissection tables. Here they bent that knowledge toward a monster. Vertebrae stack in pale knobs along a colossal backbone. Ribs drop like the bars of a cage. Inside that cage a horned goat strides with its beard combed into pewter strands. A bird skull opens its hooked beak. Down in the bone rubble a startled face with coiled curls stares straight at you.
Engravers built every shadow from parallel cuts alone. Ash gray crowds the dense zones, and vellum light glows wherever the plate stayed bare. Mannerist strangeness swells in each line.
